When you think of Texas, you probably conjure up images of cowboy hats, queso-laden arteries, and celebratory gunfire to mark the end of rodeo.
And Texas has things like that, it’s true. Plenty of cowboy hats, rednecks, guns, and heart clogging food abound. What you don’t think when you think of Texas is something like this:
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, located just 30 minutes from downtown Houston was built in 2004 from 33,000 pieces of hand-carved Italian marble and Turkish limestone. The BAPS congregation themselves have practiced in Houston since 1977.
Entry to the complex is free, though like any house of worship visitors should be respectful to the rules of the building and its congregants. Shoes must be taken off to enter the mandir. The interior of the mandir is a sight to behold in itself, but photography is prohibited inside. Nevertheless, there is plenty outside to take pictures of, and it’s well worth the free visit to see an unheard of piece of Texas.
